It does have positive benefits for oneself, but I think forgiveness is about reconciling a relationship and not something we do primarily for 'inner peace'.
We are made in the image of God, and God forgives. When we forgive, we are participating in being made in that image. The more we participate, the more we will become what God always intended for us to be.
So, yes, we are ultimately doing it for ourselves, but there is also much benefit in freeing the ones we forgive.
Forgiveness does feel so much better than anger and hatred. I'm sorry you are having trouble with comments. I hope it gets resolved.
