the ramblings of a woman who was transported from her comfort zone in the US Midwest to a different country and culture that shouldn't be so different, but is.
The Tarata Tunnel was dug by hand in 1904. Constructed to enable residents to get to the valley from Waitara, it is approximately 30 metres long. https://terangiaoaonunui.pukeariki.com/story-collections/taranaki-tunnels/tarata-tunnel-1904/
What a wonderful tunnel - there is also one at Waikawhai (possibly not spelt correctly) just north of Awakino, where they also dug (by hand) through the cliff from either side, and met in the middle. That was constructed (or should that be destructed?) so the farmers could access the coast to send their wool offshore. If you want to find it, just past the Awakino Hotel, there is a bridge to your left, cross that, and head north - it's not very far from there, on your left, if my memory serves me right. An interesting view point with these photos, which are excellent.
