We will be having a holiday in the Nelson/Picton area of the South Island in January and I was wondering if any of my bloggy readers can suggest anything for a family to do. We will have 2 teens with us.
Any suggestions you can give will be greatly appreciated!

Such a lovely area and a great time of year to be there. I would do a walk in Queen Charlotte Sound if you are up for it. Water taxis. Eat mussels. Frolic in golden sands. Kayak. Fish. Will you get to Abel Tasman? Where will you stay?
I can't give any suggestions as i do not know anything about that place. But I wish a great holiday for all of you.
Marlborough is my hometown area and I love Picton and the Sounds so much! If you are into tramping I would definitely look into the Queen Charlotte Walking track. You can do short day walks, or do the whole experience of several days.
Also, I have heard that the mail boat run from Picton around the Sounds is worth it (warning though - it is expensive). http://www.mailboat.co.nz/
There are a few lodges and restaurants dotted in the Sounds that you could take trips out to.
As for the Nelson area, it is a long time since I have been there, but there are some beautiful beaches up around Kaiteriteri, and I have heard good reports from people who have taken trips out to Farewell Spit, which is a bit further around.
Hope that is helpful info. for you.
I was going to say - the four wheel drive trip out to Farewell spit is well recommended.
