I was not aware of the Marines in NZ until I married, and one of my DH's aunts had married a US serviceman! I also have a relative who was the son of a single mother and a US Marine father, who was not too keen to admit to his infidelity to his wife... Nice to see that there is memorial to them. My mother lived near there during the war. She probably knew a few of the lads, but she married a dinkum kiwi
