This is the wreck of the S. S. Waitangi that sank at the Patea breakwater in 1923. It was covered with black sand for decades, peeking from its resting place on occasion, but being covered again. The winds uncovered it over the last few years but I haven't been to Patea for a while, so I don't know if it's still visible. Click here for more information.

Sad to say but here in the US this would have already been looted or graffiti sprayed on it.
The ship looks a little sad and abounded. Groetjes Hetty
Just as beautiful as it is in the sand
Poor old girl slowly rusting away.
I was a bit surprised ny the first comment, I thought it only happens in countries with poor tesidents like us here. Even those steel will be looted for junk sale.
Its amazing that the wreck remains where it is and that no one disturbs or cart away pieces of the wreck.
It makes you wonder what happened.
There is remarkably much of it left, to think that it went down on May 5 1923 after hitting the breakwater. High seas and strong winds will have moved the sands, but I wonder if the iron sand dredging will have had an influence?

WOW! That is really cool. Thanks for sharing. Love the texture between the ship and the sand.
Love these photos on the beach. They look very dramatic.
